Balthasar Mentzer the Elder

Balthasar Mentzer the Elder (born February 27, 1565 in Allendorf , Hesse; † January 6, 1627 in Marburg / Lahn ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Mentzer studied at the University of Marburg . In 1589 he was appointed pastor in Kirtorf against his will by his sovereign Ludwig IV . He made a name for himself in the scientific world through his discussion of Reformed Christology and the doctrine of the Last Supper , published in 1593/94 , so that he became professor of theology in Marburg in 1596 and at the recently founded Lutheran University of Giessen in 1607 . When this university was relocated to Marburg in 1625, Mentzer also moved there again.

His son was Balthasar Mentzer the Younger (1614–1679), his sons-in-law Justus Feuerborn and Menno Hanneken .
