Balthasar Mentzer the Younger (also Balthasar Mentzer the Younger or Balthasar Mentzer II , born May 11, 1614 in Gießen , † July 18, 1679 in Darmstadt ) was a German Lutheran theologian . Balthasar Mentzer was like his father Balthasar Mentzer the Elder. Ä. a representative of Lutheran Orthodoxy.

Life

Mentzer studied at the University of Marburg in 1628 . In 1630 he disputed his philosophical thesis De syllogismo infinito . From 1631 he studied with Johann Georg Dorsche and Johann Konrad Dannhauer at the University of Strasbourg , and at the University of Jena with Johann Ernst Gerhard and Johannes Major .

In 1640 he became an associate professor of theology and in 1641 a full professor of philosophy at the University of Marburg . In 1642 he received his doctorate in theology .

In 1646 he was appointed full professor of theology at the University of Rinteln , as the successor to Johannes Gisenius . After troubled times, he was appointed professor at the re-established University of Gießen in 1651 by Georg II Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt . In 1652, his sovereign transferred him to Darmstadt as chief preacher and superintendent.
