Samuel Pomarius ( Latinized from Baumgarten , born April 26, 1624 near Winzig, today Wińsko in Silesia , † March 2, 1683 in Lübeck ) was a German Lutheran theologian and superintendent of the city of Lübeck.

family

Samuel Pomarius was the son of the miller Kasper Baumgart and Martha Hoffmann. On June 20, 1654 he married Dorothea, the daughter of the late rector of the University of Wittenberg Jeremias Reusner and Anna Maria Schröter. Their daughter Dorothea (1664–1731) married the Lübeck pastor Jacob von Melle ; another daughter, Elisabeth, first married the preacher Hoppman at the Aegidien Church and, after his death, the wealthy merchant Thomas Fredenhagen .

Life

Pomarius was initially supposed to become a businessman, but then studied theology in Breslau , Thorn , Frankfurt (Oder) and on September 4, 1644 in Wittenberg . In Wittenberg he acquired the academic degree of a master’s degree on October 14, 1647, received the qualification to teach physics on May 6, 1648 and was accepted as an adjunct in the philosophical faculty on November 29, 1649. After spending some time in this position, he received his first appointment to a pastor in 1653 in Beschin in Silesia. From there, he came as a deacon at the Berlin St. Peter's Church . In 1659 Pomarius went to the Magdeburg Sankt-Jakobi-Kirche as a pastor (both church buildings were badly damaged in World War II and then blown up).

In 1667 he became rector and first professor of theology at the newly founded Evangelical College in Eperjes (today: Prešov ) in Upper Hungary , today's eastern Slovakia. On August 15 of the same year he received his doctorate in theology in Wittenberg. Driven out of Hungary by the persecution of the Evangelicals, he returned to the University of Wittenberg in 1673, initially as a professor extraordinary.

In February 1675, the council of the imperial city of Lübeck appointed him superintendent after a five-year vacancy , which was connected with a sermon position at the Marienkirche . Like his predecessor Menno Hanneken , he consistently represented the standpoint of Lutheran orthodoxy , which included defending the city's denominational unity against Catholics, Calvinists and followers of spiritualism . In 1680 he used the anniversary celebrations of the Book of Concord to confirm the fundamental importance of the Lutheran creed for the community.

Despite his denominational harshness, Pomarius was popular among the citizens, also because like his predecessor he mediated in social disputes such as the brewer riots.

estate

In addition to his pamphlets, the Lübeck city library keeps five handwritten volumes with prayers, reflections and sermons.
