George Ogden Abell

George Ogden Abell (born March 1, 1927 in Los Angeles , † October 7, 1983 in Encino , California ) was an American astronomer .

Life

Abell graduated from the California Institute of Technology (CalTech) with a Bachelor of Science (1951), a Master of Science (1952) and a PhD (Ph.D. 1957) . He was a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles . Among the topics of his research were planetary nebulae , but his contribution to the beginnings of observational cosmology deserves special mention . On the basis of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey , he has been compiling the Abell catalog of galaxy clusters since the 1950s , with the help of which it was possible for the first time to investigate the structure of the universe up to a redshift of about 0.2 and which has remained important to this day .

Abell is one of the discoverers of Comet 52P / Harrington-Abell . The asteroid (3449) Abell is named after him. He was also a member of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry , an international organization of the skeptic movement.
