Life

Laura Anne Karpman was born to Harold Lew and Rodelle, née Grisor, Karpman in La Jolla, a neighborhood in San Diego. After receiving her bachelor's degree in music with magna cum laude from the University of Michigan in 1980 , she graduated with a master's degree from the Juilliard School in 1983 , where she also received her PhD in music in 1985 .

After working in New York for over a decade, she moved to Los Angeles at the invitation of the Sundance Film Scoring Workshop , where she received instruction in film composition from, among others, David Newman , Dave Grusin and Shirley Walker . Since her first independent film composition for the television drama My Brother's Wife in 1989, it was mainly television productions for which Karpman was hired. Since composing the music for the series Taken, produced by Steven Spielberg , she has been increasingly engaged for music composition in video games such as EverQuest II and Field Commander .

In addition to her composition work, Karpman has also taught at several American universities since her doctorate, including the Lincoln Center Institute (1985 to 1987), Rutgers University (1987 to 1988) and Whittier College (1989 to 1990). Since 2005 she has been a visiting lecturer at UCLA .
