action

The film depicts the couple Chipaul and Millie Cao and their love story. Both belonged to the Chinese minority in Vietnam , where they met and fell in love during the Vietnam War . Chipaul had to flee when the Viet Cong reached his hometown. He reached the United States and took a few years to figure out how to catch up with Millie. They settled in Southern California . The film also accompanies them in dance lessons they take to celebrate their wedding anniversary , Millie's birthday and the fortieth anniversary of his arrival in America.

Lauren Nix originally wanted to make a documentary about mini-malls in the San Fernando Valley when she happened to meet the Cao couple there. Laura Nix sees the film as not just about a couple in their prime learning to dance. She sees the film as an opinion on immigration policy. The Caos are amazed at the success of the film, they thought it would just be a fun movie for the kids to see.

Awards

The film was nominated for both the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and an Oscar for best short film.
