Antonio Tornielli (born January 27, 1579 in Novara , † March 8, 1650 in Rome ) was an Italian clergyman and bishop of Novara .

Life

He was first a canon and provost in Novara. On May 10, 1619 Pope Paul V appointed him inquisitor in Malta . Already in August 1621 he left Malta and went to Rome, where he became vice-gentleman during the pontificate of Urban VIII . In 1627 he became a judge of the Congregation Propaganda Fidei , after he had enrolled with little success at five Roman colleges between 1622 and 1625 to learn the Arabic language .

On December 15, 1636 he was appointed Bishop of Novara. He was ordained bishop on January 25, 1637 by Cardinal Antonio Marcello Barberini ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Faustus Poli and Celso Zani OFM, former Bishop of Città della Pieve .

Due to a disagreement with the Duke of Milan over the judicial powers that the Bishop of Novara had and which the Holy See had rejected, he was called to Rome, where he died. He was buried in Novara Cathedral .
