Jean Balland
Jean Marie Julien Cardinal Balland (born July 26, 1934 in Bué near Bourges , France , † March 1, 1998 in Lyon ) was a French clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Lyon .
Life
Jean Balland entered the Pontifical French Seminary in Rome and studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University . In 1956 he completed his studies with a licentiate in philosophy and in Catholic theology. He later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris , where he completed his studies with doctorates in philosophy and theology . He was ordained a priest on September 3, 1961 . After his ordination he was a lecturer at the seminary in Bourges, which he had attended. From 1967 to 1973 he taught in Tours .
Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Dijon on November 6, 1982 . He was ordained episcopal by the Archbishop of Bourges , Paul Vignancour , on December 12th of the same year in the Cathedral of Dijon ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Lyon, Albert Decourtray , and the Archbishop of Besançon , Lucien Daloz . On the occasion of his episcopal ordination he chose the motto Veritatem facientes in caritate (“ To do the truth in love”). On August 8, 1988, John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Reims and on May 27, 1995 Archbishop of Lyon. On February 21, 1998, John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli in the college of cardinals .
Cardinal Balland died on March 1st of the same year at the age of 63 in a Lyon hospital of complications from bronchial carcinoma .
