Lucien Daloz

Lucien Charles Gilbert Daloz (born October 9, 1930 in Syam , Jura department , France ; † July 31, 2012 in Jouhe , Jura department) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Besançon .

Life

Lucien Daloz studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Notre-Dame seminary in Vaux-sur-Polignyan and at the Pontifical Gregorian University and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1955 . Then he was from 1955 to 1957 Kaplan in the parish of San Luigi dei Francesi near the Piazza Navona in Rome and graduated at the Gregorian postgraduate studies, in which he in 1957 the licentiate in scholastic philosophy acquired and in 1959 with a dissertation on St. John Chrysostom to Dr. theol. PhD . From 1957 to 1958 he was vicar in Morez , an industrial community in the French Jura department. In 1958 he became a lecturer at the Montciel seminary in Lons-le-Saunier and from 1961 to 1969 its Regens . In 1970 he became vicar general of the diocese of Saint-Claude .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on August 5, 1975 Bishop of Langres . The bishop emeritus of Saint-Claude , Claude-Constant-Marie Flusin , donated him the episcopal ordination on October 19, 1975 in the cathedral of Langres ; Co - consecrators were Alfred-Joseph Atton , Bishop Emeritus of Langres, and Gilbert-Antoine Duchêne , Bishop of Saint-Claude. His motto Il n'y a pas de plus grand amour que de donner sa vie pour ses amis (“There is no greater love than when one gives his life for his friends”) comes from the Gospel of John ( John 15:13  EU ). Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Besançon on December 12, 1980, and on August 13, 2003 he accepted his resignation due to reasons of age.

From 2000 to 2003 he was President of the Justice and Peace Commission of the French Bishops' Conference and a member of the Commission for Religious Education and for the Universal Mission of the Church. He was also the author of several books.

He died at the pilgrimage site of Notre-Dame de Mont-Roland in Jouhe, where he had lived since his retirement and was still active in pastoral care. The exsequies will be celebrated on August 3, 2012 in Besançon Cathedral .
