Gérard Denis Auguste Defois (born January 5, 1931 in Nueil-sur-Layon , Maine-et-Loire department , France ) is a French Catholic theologian and bishop emeritus of Lille .

Life

Gérard Defois was ordained a priest on October 11, 1956 and was incardinated in the clergy of the Angers diocese . From 1977 to 1984 he was General Secretary of the French Bishops' Conference . From 1984 to 1990 he was Rector of the Catholic University of Lyon .

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor archbishop of Sens on July 26, 1990 . The Archbishop of Lyon , Albert Cardinal Decourtray , ordained him episcopal on October 6th of the same year; Co - consecrators were Eugène-Marie Ernoult , Archbishop of Sens, and Jean Orchampt , Bishop of Angers .

After the resignation of Eugène-Marie Ernoult , he succeeded him on December 21, 1990 in the office of Archbishop of Sens. On September 4, 1995, he was appointed Archbishop of Reims . On July 2, 1998, he was appointed Bishop of Lille , combined with the title of Archbishop ad personam .

On February 1, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
