Thierry Romain Camille Jordan (born August 31, 1943 in Shanghai ) is a French clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Reims .

Life

Thierry Jordan was born as the son of the financier Pierre Jordan and his wife Henriette, geb. Roquebert, born. After attending grammar school in Versailles , he entered the seminary of Versailles and later moved to the Institut catholique de Paris . He was ordained a priest on December 17, 1966 , whereupon he obtained a doctorate from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After serving as vicariate in Rome at the Church of San Luigi dei Francesi and in Versailles, he was appointed to the State Secretariat of the Vatican in 1972 as Secretary to Cardinal Jean-Marie Villot . Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on June 15, 1977 the honorary title of chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ). Back in France, he was in charge of the parish of Sainte-Marguerite du Vésinet between 1980 and 1984 and was then episcopal vicar in charge of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines region.

In 1986 he was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Versailles and the following year he was appointed Coadjutor Bishop for André Rousset, Bishop of Pontoise . He was on 13 December 1987 in the Cathedral of St. Maclou of Pontoise the bishop consecrated. On March 20, 1999, he was appointed to succeed Archbishop Gérard Defois as Archbishop of Reims, who in 1998 had been appointed Archbishop of Lille .

In the French Bishops' Conference he performed various tasks, including from 1987 to 1991 a member of the Committee on Connections with Islam and from 1990 to 2004 Chairman of the Legal Committee.

Pope Francis accepted his resignation on August 18, 2018, a few days before reaching the age limit for bishops.
