Hermann Tietz (born April 29, 1837 in Birnbaum , Province of Posen ; † May 3, 1907 in Berlin ) was a German merchant of Jewish faith and namesake of the Hertie department store company .

Hermann Tietz, who had lived in America for two decades and had experience of the economic life there, financed his nephew Oscar Tietz (1858–1923) to set up a textile retail business in Gera in 1882 , but left as a partner that same year. Funding expansion into other cities under his name and the introduction of new sales practices and techniques were one of the foundations Hermann Tietz laid for the company's success.

Markus Tietz (1849–1901) was a younger brother of Hermann, who in 1886, together with another brother Karl and with the support of Hermann Tietz, founded the H. & C. Tietz department store (for Hermann and Chaskel) in Bamberg, 14 Hauptwachstrasse. As early as 1887, only Markus Tietz was the owner. The Bamberg house opened further branches in Schweinfurt, Erfurt, Chemnitz, Gera and Frankfurt am Main. In 1901, after the untimely death of his brother Markus Tietz, his wife Julie Tietz (1853–1930), who was born in Birnbaum as Julie Baumann, took over the management. After his death in 1926, his company took over the KaDeWe department store (founded by Adolf Jandorf).

Hermann Tietz was the uncle of Leonhard Tietz , the founder of the company called Kaufhof since 1933 .

Hermann Tietz was buried at the Jewish cemetery in Berlin-Weißensee in field O2. Since 1995 the grave has been listed as an honorary grave for the city of Berlin .
