Politics and world events

Roman Empire

  • March 1st / May 21st : The emperors (augusti) Diocletian and Maximian appoint Constantius I and Galerius as caesares - the two assume responsibility for parts of the Roman Empire , which is beset by all sides, and are responsible to the augusti . They are also determined to be the successors of Diocletian and Maximian. This system of power sharing is known as the Roman Tetrarchy .
  • While Rome remains nominally the capital of the empire, the rulers expand four other cities into their seats of government: Nicomedia in Asia Minor, today's İzmit becomes the capital of the Oriens prefecture. Here Diocletian takes care of the threat from the Sassanid Empire . Sirmium in Pannonia, near today's Sremska Mitrovica , becomes the capital of the Illyricum prefecture, which is subordinate to Galerius. Mediolanum, now Milan , becomes the capital of Maximian's prefecture of Italia et Africa. Treveris , today the German city of Trier , becomes the capital of Constantius, who takes over the western prefecture of Galliae.
  • The new Caesar Constantius attacks the renegade Carausius , who has asserted himself as ruler of Britain and Northern Gaul for years . In the port city of Bononia , now Boulogne-sur-Mer , the renegades are defeated and their rule over Gaul is ended.
  • Because of his defeat at Bononia, Carausius is murdered by his treasurer Allectus in Eburacum (York), who declares himself emperor.
