Johann Balthasar Schupp

Johann Balthasar Schupp (also Schuppius , pseudonyms: Antenor , Ambrosius Mellilambius , born March 1, 1610 in Gießen ; † October 26, 1661 in Hamburg ) was a German satirical writer and spiritual poet .

Life

Schupp attended school in his hometown and from 1625 studied theology and philosophy in Marburg . In 1628 he made a trip through southern Germany and the Baltic Sea regions. In October 1630 he continued his studies at the University of Rostock , where he obtained his master's degree on August 18, 1631 under Peter Lauremberg . He then began teaching at the University of Marburg. He fled to Holland from the turmoil of war and the plague; from 1635 he was professor of history and eloquence in Marburg, from 1643 also pastor at the Elisabethkirche . In 1645 he received his doctorate in theology.

After he had lost all his possessions during the conquest of Marburg in 1646, he became court preacher to the Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and consistorial councilor in Braubach . 1647–1648 he took part in the peace negotiations in Münster as the Landgrave's delegate , where in 1648 he gave the two peace sermons. From 1649 he worked as the main pastor at the Jakobikirche in Hamburg , where he was famous for his eloquence.

In 1657 Schupp was banned from publishing in Hamburg because of his satirical writings, so that from then on his works appeared in Wolfenbüttel . Schupp also wrote educational publications and was considered a spiritual poet of rank.

In German dictionary of the brothers Grimm it is (under his Latinized name Schuppius ) as the first of the " Johan Balhorn , the book trucker to Soost in Westphalia, which the abcbuch expanded and improved herauszgeben Liesz" one thing in mind Verschlimmbesserers was mentioned.
