Severin Schlüter (also: Slüter ; * October 18, 1571 in Halle (Westphalia) ; † July 16, 1648 in Hamburg ) was a German schoolboy and Protestant theologian.

Life

Born as the son of the mayor's son Berend Slüter, he attended grammar schools in Herford and Osnabrück . There he acquired the maturity to attend a university and then visited the universities in Cologne , Erfurt and Helmstedt . After he had acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in Helmstedt , he held various positions as private tutor and court master . In 1603 he went to the Gymnasium Athenaeum Stade as vice rector , where he took over the rectorate the following year and made the acquaintance of Johann Arndt .

From this office he was called in 1613 as a preacher to Bücken in the county of Hoya . In 1615 he became pastor in Winsen (Aller) . On April 22nd, 1617 he was appointed main pastor of the St. Jakobikirche in Hamburg . After he took up this office on June 20, 1617, he held theological lectures at the local academic high school from 1621 to 1625 and in 1646, as a senior of the Hamburg Ministry of Spirituality, became the spokesman for the Lutheran pastorate of Hamburg.

Slueter was one of the most important independent theologians of his time. Not only did Johann Arndt recognize his work, Johann Gerhard also praised his work. His index expurgatorius hispanicus from 1667 landed on the index and was not allowed to be read. Genealogically, it should be noted that he had married Maria, the daughter of Pastor Daniel Funke. In this marriage there were 12 children, most of them died in childhood. Only his daughter Catharina and the later mayor of Hamburg Johann Schlueter lived to see adulthood.
