Juan de Peñaloza y Benavides , (also Peñalosa ) (* around 1625 in Molina de Aragón , Spain ; † March 1, 1709 in Lima , today Peru ) was a Spanish lawyer and colonial administrator who served as viceroy of Peru .

Life

Peñaloza came from Spain and came from the lower nobility. His parents were Juan de Peñaloza and Jerónima Manuela de Benavides. He received a legal education in Spain. He went to South America in 1660 and initially served as fiscal at the Real Audiencia de Quito . In 1671 he moved to the Real Audiencia of Lima , where he was later promoted to Oidor .

When the viceroy Melchor Portocarrero Lasso de la Vega died in September 1705, Peñaloza took over the office as president and senior Oidor on an interim basis .

His term of office lasted almost two years and was determined internally by a strict austerity course. In terms of foreign policy, it was important to cushion the consequences of the War of the Spanish Succession .

In July 1707 Peñaloza handed over the office of viceroy to his regular successor, Manuel de Oms y de Santa Pau , who was sent from Spain . He was named Consejero de Su Majestad in honor of 1708 and died the following year.
