Manuel de Oms y de Santa Pau
Manuel de Oms y de Santa Pau (in Catalan Manuel Sentmenat-Oms de Santa Pau i de Lanuza ; * 1651 in Barcelona ; † April 24, 1710 in Lima ) was a Spanish diplomat and viceroy of Peru from 1707 to 1710.
Life
Manuel de Oms came from a Catalan family who sided with the Bourbons in the dispute over the Spanish succession . He became Viceroy of Mallorca and Spanish Ambassador to Portugal. 1696 was appointed Marqués de Castelldosrius for his services to the crown . From 1698 to 1703 he was ambassador at the court of Louis XIV , where he was used for the establishment of Felipe de Borbón as King of Spain.
For his loyalty to the Bourbon family, he was appointed Viceroy of Peru on December 31, 1704. Adverse circumstances delayed his trip, so that he could not take up office in Lima until May 1707. His term of office was marked by disputes with the merchants ( Tribunal de Consulado de Lima ) Lima, on the other hand by disputes with English privateers such as Thomas Colb , Charles Wager and Woodes Rogers .
De Oms shaped social life in Lima based on the French model. In 1709 he founded the first literary academy, which he chaired himself and which u. a. the writer Pedro de Peralta y Barnuevo , the clergyman Miguel Sáenz Cascante , the Marqués de Brenes and the Father Agustín Sáenz belonged. For the birth of Philip V's first son, he composed the musical comedy El mejor escudo de Perseo and performed it in Lima in 1708.
