Alexandar Nikolaew Fol ( Bulgarian Александър Николаев Фол ; born July 3, 1933 in Sofia , Bulgaria ; † March 1, 2006 ibid) was a Bulgarian historian and thracologist .

Life

In 1957 Fol began studying ancient history at the History Faculty of St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia, from which he graduated in 1966 with a doctorate. He then continued his studies at the Collège de France in Paris and at the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin . From 1972 he worked as a lecturer and from 1975 as a professor. From 1980 to 1986 he was Minister for Culture and Education of the People's Republic of Bulgaria . In 1986 the habilitation took place . His research areas lay in the history of the classical world (Greece and Rome), the cultural history of Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor, and Indo-European studies . He did outstanding work in the field of Thracology, the interdisciplinary research into the culture and history of the Thracians .

Fol was the founding director of the Institute of Thracology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia, which he headed from 1972 to 1992 and which today bears his name. During this time he organized the International Thracology Congresses in Sofia, Bucharest , Vienna , Rotterdam , Moscow and Palma . He was general secretary of the International Council for Indo-European and Thracological Studies. At the University of Sofia he was head of the Department of Ancient History and Thracology in the Faculty of History between 1979 and 1987 and since 1991 Professor of the Cultural History of Southeast Europe at the Faculty of Philosophy.

He was the founder of the Bulgarian Research Institute in Vienna and the Gymnasium for Ancient Languages ​​and Culture in Sofia. Since 1983 he was the Bulgarian head of the archaeological research project in the area of ​​the eastern Bulgarian village Drama , which was carried out by the German side under the direction of Jan Lichardus from the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory of the Saarland University .

Alexandar Fol was a member of the Accademia Medicea in Florence , the German Archaeological Institute and the Leibniz Society in Berlin, as well as the Académie Maison Internationale des Intellectuels in Paris. He has received numerous guest professorships in England , the USA , Russia , Germany , Japan , Greece , Italy , Sweden and France . His publications include, among other things, 12 monographs on the Thracian political and social history, and he was the editor of several publications in the field of Thracology.

Alexandar Fol died of stomach cancer in March 2006 at the age of 72 . He was buried in the Sofia Central Cemetery .
