Hans Orlowski

Hans Otto Orlowski (born March 1, 1894 in Insterburg , East Prussia , † May 3, 1967 in Berlin ) was a German painter and wood cutter .

Life

From 1911 to 1915 Orlowski studied with Harold Bengen at the arts and crafts school in Charlottenburg , specializing in linocuts. After participating in the First World War and being wounded , the first exhibition participations took place. In 1918 he took part in the Berlin Secession . From 1918 to 1919 he attended the State Art School in Berlin, where he learned from Philipp Franck . From 1922 to 1945 he worked at the arts and crafts school . In 1931 he was appointed professor here. Orlowski is the creator of numerous woodcuts and series of illustrations. In 1924 he took a trip to Paris and turned away from Expressionism. He destroyed his first works by hand. In 1934 the first solo exhibition took place in the Gurlitt Gallery in Berlin. In 1945 he became head of a class for wall and glass painting at the Berlin School of Fine Arts . Exhibitions in Munich, Linz and Würzburg followed in 1953. In 1954 he founded the "Jubilee Foundation 1848/1948 Fine Arts". 1964 was his last exhibition in Berlin.
