George Wishart (* 1513 in Pitarrow , Kincardineshire , † March 1, 1546 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish religious reformer and Protestant martyr .

George Wishart was born around 1513 to James Wyshart and Elizabeth Learmont. He studied ancient languages at the University of Aberdeen and worked as a school principal in Montrose until he was accused of heresy in 1538 by John Hepburn , Bishop of Brechin . For this reason he fled to Germany and Switzerland , where he joined the supporters of Jean Calvin .

In 1543 he returned to the British Isles and went to Scotland in 1544, where he met John Knox and became his mentor . John Knox became a close confidante of Wishart and was considered his bodyguard. For the protection of Wishart, John Knox always carried his bihandler with him. George Wishart preached the Protestant faith until around 1546, after which he was first accused of heresy by Cardinal David Beaton , the leader of the anti-Protestant movement, and then burned at the stake in St. Andrews . John Knox stayed by his side until his death. On May 29, a group of Protestants took St. Andrews Castle and killed Cardinal David Beaton.

Quote from George Wishart: "I know that I shall finish my life in that bloodthirsty man's hands, but it will not be after this manner."
