The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Christophorus is a listed church building in Niederselters in the Taunus ( Limburg-Weilburg district ).

prehistory

A chapel is mentioned in 1340 . It had a choir tower that collapsed in the 17th century and was restored. In 1717, after the old one was demolished, the new church was built. The medieval and fortified tower remained standing. The old Catholic parish church of St. Christophorus stands in a ring surrounded by residential houses on the raised, former churchyard area in the old town center and is now a cultural and event building.

History and architecture

The new building was a replacement for the old parish church , which had become too small and which also bears the patronage of St. Christopher . In November 1906 the church council selected the Mainz architect August Greifzu and commissioned him to create the drawings. After approval of the building, the foundation stone was laid on June 29, 1908. After only 13 months of construction, the parish church of St. Christophorus was inaugurated on July 25, 1909 as a three-aisled pillar basilica in neo-Romanesque style. An identical but smaller version of the parish church was built in Freigericht - Bernbach with the parish church of St. Bartholomew .

Greifzu created a three-aisled pillar basilica in the neo-Romanesque style, in keeping with contemporary tastes. On the western side of the nave a massive bell tower breaks through the aisle. As a counterweight, the architect added a small round tower on the east side.

The facade of the ship and tower is structured by several axes made of natural stone, which are interrupted by plastered surfaces. In terms of color and design, Greifzu leaned heavily on the Limburg Cathedral .

The organ has 38 registers spread over three manuals and pedal.

Bells

Four bells by the two renowned bell founders Rincker from Sinn and Otto from Hemelingen / Bremen hang in the church tower . The oldest was cast after the First World War in 1924 and is called the Sacrament Bell and weighs 750 kilograms. After the Second World War , three more bells were cast. Two in 1951 and the largest in 1959, weighing 1150 kilograms. The bells harmonize with the bell of the evangelical church, which is tailored to them .
