Willibald Krieger

Willibald Krieger SJ (also Wilibald Krieger or Willibaldus Krieger ; born February 11, 1685 in Deggendorf , Germany , † March 1, 1769 in Graz , Austria ) was a German Jesuit, theologian , philosopher and physicist .

Willibald Krieger joined the Society of Jesuits in 1702 at the age of 17 and was accepted into the Austrian Order Province .

He was a doctor of philosophy and theology and taught at the universities of Graz and Vienna . First he taught ethics in Graz . In 1715/1716 he was professor of logic at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna .

From 1722 to 1724 he was professor of ethics and philosophy at the University of Graz . There Ludwig Debiel defended his dissertation Metamorphoses Styriae , which appeared in 1722. Krieger also dealt with other issues. In addition to Anton Vanossi (1688–1757) and Peter Halley (1707–1789), he took up the ideas of Francesco Lana Terzi on airship travel and in 1723 published the work Rudimenta physica, De Sono. Ex variis Autoribus praecipue P. de Lanis collecta .

In 1728, Willibald Krieger was dean of the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna and thus alongside Augustin Ristl (theology), Franz Adam Pfann (law) and Johann Adam von Mannenbach (medicine) dean of one of the four classical faculties.

From 1736 to 1740 Krieger was Provincial of the Austrian Jesuits.

In Graz he was Regens des Konvikt twice and from 1740 to 1743 and from 1750 to 1754 rector of the university. From 1750 he was the superior and teacher of Michael Denis , whom he accompanied on a trip to the Geyrach Charterhouse in 1757 . Denis thought Krieger was the most worthy Jesuit he has ever seen .
