Johann Georg Müller (born September 3, 1759 in Neunkirch , † November 20, 1819 in Schaffhausen ) was a Swiss theologian , educator , historian , publicist and politician .

Life

Johann Georg Müller was the son of the pastor and teacher Johann Georg Müller (1722–1779) and Anna Maria Schoop (1724–1790) and the younger brother of the Schaffhausen theologian, historian, publicist and statesman Johannes von Müller (1752–1809).

Johann Georg Müller initially studied theology in Zurich from March 1779 to February 1780 , where he joined the circle of Johann Kaspar Lavater . Müller remained friends with Lavater until his death. From April 1780 he continued his studies following the example of his older brother in Göttingen and joined Freemasonry . After saying goodbye to Göttingen in September 1781, he sat in with Johann Gottfried Herder in Weimar until the end of March 1782 .

Returning to Schaffhausen in April, Johann Georg Müller passed the theological exam in August 1782 and subsequently held different positions as preacher (1783), pedagogue (1788) and professor at the Collegium humanitatis (1794). From 1789 onwards there was extensive journalistic activity. In March 1798 Müller, who had been elected to the Schaffhausen National Assembly, resigned from the clergy and worked as a deputy in the church and school chamber of the Helvetic Republic , even if he was still close to the old regime of the Confederation .

In the years after 1799 Müller reformed the school and library system in the canton of Schaffhausen and edited all of Herder's works as co-editor and those of his brother, who died in 1809, as sole editor. The latter was published by Cotta between 1810 and 1819 . From March to May 1805 Müller was a member of the mediation government. In 1817 he received an honorary doctorate from the universities of Tübingen and Jena. Johann Georg Müller died in Schaffhausen on November 20, 1819.

Johann Georg Müller was married to Maria Katharina (* 1768; † 1819), daughter of the Schaffhausen businessman Eberhard Gaupp .
