Karl Schib (born September 5, 1898 in Möhlin , † September 22, 1984 in Schaffhausen ), entitled to live in Möhlin, was a Swiss historian , educator and politician ( FDP ).

Family and work

Karl Schib was the son of the farmer Fridolin Schib and the Ida nee Schneider, older brother of the CIP politician Paul Schib . The graduate of the Wettingen teacher training college then turned to studying history at the Universities of Basel and Paris . He completed this in 1927 with the acquisition of the academic degree of Dr. rer. pole. from.

Karl Schib was employed as a district teacher in Kaiserstuhl from 1924 , in 1930 he switched to the Schaffhausen Cantonal School as a history teacher , a position he held until he retired in 1963.

Karl Schib was editor of the Historical Atlas of Switzerland , member of the "Historical Association of the Canton of Aargau" and of the "Historical Association of the Canton of Schaffhausen". He stood out in particular through contributions to Swiss history , the history of the Middle Ages and politics. In 1973 Karl Schib received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern , and in the following year he was made an honorary citizen of Schaffhausen.

In 1924 he married Oliva, the daughter of Jakob Moser. Karl Schib died in Schaffhausen in 1984 shortly after completing his 86th year.

Political functions

As a member of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland (FDP), Karl Schib was elected to the Schaffhausen Cantonal Council in 1940 , of which he was a member until 1943. Schib was then appointed FDP party president of the canton of Schaffhausen. He resigned from this position in 1949.
