Gela Bezhuashvili ( Georgian გელა ბეჟუაშვილი * 1. March 1967 in Manglisi , Kvemo Kartli ) is a Georgian non-party politicians . The diplomat was Georgia's Defense Minister from February to June 2004. From October 2005 to January 2008 he was his country's foreign minister. Since February 1st, 2008 he has been the head of the Georgian intelligence service .

Life

He graduated from the Ukrainian Institute for International Relations and International Law of the Kiev State University in 1991 . In 1997 he received the Edmund S. Muskie Graduate Fellowship Program at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas , Texas, with the titles Master of Laws and LL.M-International and Comparative Law . In 2003 he studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge , Massachusetts .

In 1991 he joined the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, worked in the international legal department. From 1993 to 1996 he was the Georgian envoy to Kazakhstan . Between 1997 and 2000 he was Head of the Department of International Law in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was involved in drafting Georgian laws on the foreign service and the National Security Council, and represented his country in various expert bodies of the Council of Europe .

From 2000 to 2004 he was Deputy Foreign Minister under President Eduard Shevardnadze and the acting presidency of Nino Burjanadze . In February 2004 he was elected Georgia's first civil defense minister on the proposal of President Mikheil Saakashvili . He retired the majority of the Georgian generals and reduced the strength of the armed forces from around 20,000 to around 15,000 soldiers. In June 2004 he became Chairman of the National Security Council and Security Advisor to the President. After the presidential election in January 2008 , he was replaced as Foreign Minister by Dawit Bakradse . Beschuashvili initially announced that he would withdraw from politics. On February 1, 2008, he was appointed head of the Georgian intelligence service by the president.

The American Biographical Institute named him Man of the Year in 2004. In 2006 he received the Ukrainian Order of Merit, First Class.

Beschuashvili is married and has two sons. He speaks English, Russian and Spanish. His brother David is a co-owner of the TV stations Mse TV and Rustavi 2 and a member of the Georgian Parliament for the United National Movement .
