Grigol Vashadze ( Georgian გრიგოლ ვაშაძე ; born July 19, 1958 in Tbilisi , Georgian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Georgian diplomat, businessman and politician. From 2008 to 2012 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

Life

In 1975 he graduated from Tbilisi High School N61. In 1981 he graduated from the Faculty of International Law at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations with honors. In the same year he joined the Soviet Foreign Ministry, worked in the International Organizations and Komos and Nuclear Weapons departments . With a negotiating delegation, he took part in talks on the START I disarmament agreement . From 1988 to 1990 he completed postgraduate studies at the Soviet Diplomatic Academy.

1990 Vashadze switched to the private sector. He lived as an entrepreneur in Moscow and New York , founded and directed Georgia Arts Management and Gregory Vashadze and BR .

In 2005 he returned to Georgia. On February 6, 2008, he was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister, where he was primarily concerned with Georgian-Russian relations. On November 1st of the same year he took over the office of Minister of Culture. On December 5, President Saakashvili appointed him Foreign Minister of Georgia. On October 25, 2012, he was replaced by Maja Pandschikidze .

Grigol Vashadze is the prima ballerina and artistic director of the Georgian National Ballet , Nina Ananiashvili , married. They have two children, Nodar and Elene. In addition to Georgian, he speaks Russian , English , Portuguese , Italian , Spanish and French .

In the first round of the 2018 presidential election in Georgia on October 28, 2018, he finished second with 37.7% of the votes cast, behind Salome Zurabishvili (38.6%), against whom he ran in the runoff on November 28, 2018. Vashadze clearly lost the runoff election with 40.48% of the votes cast against Zurabishvili, who received 59.52% of the votes cast.
