Presidential election in Georgia 2018
The first round of the 2018 presidential election in Georgia ( Georgian საქართველოს საპრეზიდენტო არჩევნები 2018 - sakartvelos saprezidento archevnebi 2018 ) took place on October 28th. It was the seventh in the history of the third Georgian republic since 1991. The incumbent President Giorgi Margwelashvili has not run. In the runoff election on November 28, 2018, Salome Zurabishvili ran against Grigol Vashadze . Both candidates were former Foreign Ministers of Georgia. Zurabishvili was supported as an independent candidate by the ruling Georgian Dream party .
Salome Zurabishvili won the runoff election on November 28, 2018 with 59.52% of the votes cast, making her the first woman to be elected President of Georgia.
Election mode
It was the last direct election of the Georgian president. The term of office was extended to six years. In the next election in 2024, the president will be elected indirectly through an electoral assembly and limited to representative tasks. In the same year, the Georgian parliament also reforms its electoral law with the abolition of the electoral system in favor of personalized proportional representation .
There were 3,558,437 Georgians eligible to vote. The Georgians living abroad had to register with the local representations before the election and vote there. More than 50 percent of the votes were necessary for a victory in the first ballot.
Candidates
Originally 46 candidates claimed to be candidates for the presidential elections in Georgia in 2018. Of these, 21 were rejected by the election management. Thereby 25 candidates were registered for election.
