Dawit Bakradse

Dawit Bakradse ( Georgian დავით ბაქრაძე; born July 1, 1972 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian diplomat and politician ( United National Movement ). The doctor of physics was Georgia's Foreign Minister from January to April 2008. From June 2008 to October 2012 he was President of the Georgian Parliament. In 2013, he ran as a presidential candidate for the United National Movement.

Life

Education

In 1994 he graduated from the Georgian Technical University and then completed a postgraduate course in radio physics. In 1995 and 1996 he studied at the Georgian-American Institute of Public Affairs . He received his PhD in physics and mathematics from Tbilisi State University .

In 1997 he attended advanced training courses at the Swiss International Relations Institute in Geneva , and in 1998 at the George Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Germany . In 2001 he graduated from the NATO Defense College in Rome .

Public service

In 1997 he joined the Georgian Foreign Ministry as deputy head of the Department of Disarmament and Arms Control, and from 1998 to 2000 he was head of this department. From 2000 to 2002 he was deputy head of the military policy department in the Foreign Ministry. In 2002 he moved to the National Security Council of Georgia. There he was first head of the service for security affairs, then head of the department for foreign security and conflicts (2003) and finally head of the department for political security (2004).

MP

In the same year he was elected a member of the Georgian Parliament on the list of the United National Movement. He was chairman of the parliamentary committee on Euro-Atlantic integration.

minister

On July 19, 2007 he became Georgian Minister for Conflict Resolution and thus chief negotiator for the secessionist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia . On January 31, 2008, Parliament elected him Georgian Foreign Minister on the proposal of Prime Minister Lado Gurgenidses . Bakradze resigned from his ministerial office on April 23 of the same year in order to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections as the leading candidate of the ruling United National Movement . The Georgian Foreign Office took over provisionally Grigol Vashadze until Eka Tqeschelashvili was appointed as the new Foreign Minister.

President of Parliament, presidential candidate

In the parliamentary elections on May 21, 2008 , he was re-elected to the Georgian parliament and elected President of the Parliament at the constituent session of the new parliament on June 7th. After his party's defeat in the parliamentary elections in Georgia in 2012 , he became leader of the opposition. In June 2013 he was nominated as a presidential candidate for the United National Movement.

Bakradse is married and has two children. He speaks Georgian, English and Russian. He served in the Georgian armed forces and is a reserve officer.
