Local elections in Georgia 2014
The 2014 local elections in Georgia took place on June 15.
The mayors were elected in twelve cities, the heads of administration in 59 municipalities, as well as 71 municipal councils with a total of 2084 members.
Results
The turnout was 43.3% (in the 2010 local elections it was 49%).
In the local elections in Georgia in 2014, the Georgian Dream party (Kartuli Otsneba – Demokratiuli Sakartvelo, KODS) was the strongest force with 50.8%, followed by the United National Movement (Ertiani Nazionaluri Modsraoba, ENM), which stood out with 22.4% as the strongest opposition force. The third strongest force was the Democratic Movement - United Georgia (Demokratiuli Modzraoba - Ertiani Sakartvelo, DMES).
The local elections were attended by 22 international election observers from 15 countries, who judged the election to be fair, peaceful and secret.
Local government reform
The Georgian parliament decided to reform the local government before the local elections. This is intended to strengthen citizens' participation (e.g. direct election of mayors and heads of administration for the first time, in Tbilisi since 2010) and also give smaller parties the chance to move in (the threshold clause for parties was reduced from 7% to 4%) .
