history

The city's history begins around 1835 when the politician and war hero Davy Crockett stopped here on his way to the Battle of the Alamo . According to stories, he asked the residents for the name of the community, whereupon they couldn't tell him. On the idea of suggesting a name himself, he remembered the German-American General Johann von Kalb (English Johann de Kalb ), whereupon he called the city De Kalb .

An important reason for the establishment of the community was the establishment of a local school. Some of the early settlers in the area had established DeKalb College in 1839 . Despite the fact that De Kalb for the first county seat of Bowie County was and was on good farmland, the city grew very arduous. One reason for this was the poorly developed local transport network. It was not until the Texas and Pacific Railroad was built in 1876 that the city was connected to the regional railroad network and grew. By 1884 she already had two churches, a school and a saw and grain mill; the population was around 200. By 1890 it had grown to 500, until then a bank and a local newspaper, the Flag , continued to be established.

In 1980 the number of inhabitants reached its historical peak with 2217. The city's agriculture was of regional importance.

traffic

US Highway 82 , which runs from New Mexico in the west to Georgia in the east, runs from the northwest to the southeast of the city . Northwest of the city, it crosses US Highway 259 , which runs from Heavener , Oklahoma to Nacogdoches .

About ten kilometers southeast of the city runs Interstate 30 , which leads to Fort Worth , Dallas and Little Rock , among others .
