The Museum for City History of the City Museums Freiburg in the historic late-baroque Wentzingerhaus shows the history of the city of Freiburg im Breisgau from its beginnings around 1100 to the Baroque period .

The Museum of City History is a department of the nearby Augustinian Museum . The focus is on the history of trade and commerce , the monasteries and the university . It shows models of the city around 1600 and 1700 and the structural development of the city up to the present day using views and plans.

The building was built after 1761 by the artist and founder Johann Christian Wentzinger (1710–1797) as a studio and residence for himself. Particularly worth seeing is the stair hall with ceiling paintings and in the covered courtyard the stone sculptures of the "Four Seasons" from Ebnet Castle , which are among Wentzinger's main works.

The museum exhibits are about the time of the Zähringer , while in 1218 the Duke Bertold V . died out, but are the founders of the city of Freiburg. There are also documents and exhibits on the change in city law in Freiburg, starting with the Counts of Urach , the strengthening of the guilds , the transition to the Habsburgs and ending with the transition to Baden .

Another topic of the museum is the construction of the Freiburg Minster , which explains the building technique of the Gothic through a minster model . There are contemporary documents on the individual construction phases and magnificently designed grave slabs and grave monuments .

The time of the Thirty Years' War and its consequences, the life of the clergy and the life of ordinary people are also shown, including trade , mining , handicrafts and trades .

Life in the monastery is illustrated using the Adelhausen Monastery , the most important women's monastery in Freiburg.

Two city models offer visitors ideal preparation for a city tour. They show Freiburg with its medieval walls and gates around 1600 as well as in the baroque fortress star around 1700. A third model documents the medieval construction work on Freiburg Minster .

A special feature was the Steinway - Welte - reproduction wing until 2009 , which is now shown again in the Augustinermuseum.
