Peter Kalchthaler (born June 1, 1956 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German art historian .

Peter Kalchthaler is the son of the Freiburg master baker and city councilor Alfred Kalchthaler (1930–2016). During his school days, Peter Kalchthaler was already working as a tour guide for the Freiburg Tourist Office. After completing his Abitur at Freiburg's Rotteck-Gymnasium and military service in Immendingen , he studied art history, English, German and folklore at the University of Freiburg and in 1984 obtained a master's degree with a thesis on Neu- Birnau am Bodensee . Since 1984 he has been a research assistant at the Augustinermuseum and since 1994 head of the Department of City History in the Wentzingerhaus on Münsterplatz. In the Augustinermuseum he is responsible for the collection areas of city history, weapons and base metals and has been the deputy of director Tilmann von Stockhausen since 2013 . Peter Kalchthaler has published books and articles on the history of architecture and art in Freiburg and writes regularly on these topics for the Badische Zeitung , REGIO Magazin and Freiburg Aktuell . From 1987 until it was hired in 2011, he was part of the permanent team of authors for the Freiburg Almanac . In 2006 he was appointed a member of the Alemannic Institute in Freiburg . With teaching assignments, he is regularly active for the language teaching institute of the University of Freiburg, for the educational institute of the Archdiocese of Freiburg and for the Freiburg Adult Education Center.

Peter Kalchthaler is married and has two grown sons. In his spare time he designs and leads scientific study trips to various European regions. He is an active member of the "Fasnetrufern", a Freiburg jester guild . From 1973 to 2004 he performed in the Freiburg Fasnet together with Jürgen Hack in the musical duo “Hackepeter”. Since 1984 he has slipped into the figure of "Magister Bertold Schwarz " as a political hand-made speaker .

Peter Kalchthaler works on a voluntary basis as a member of the presidium of the Freiburger Münsterbauverein eV, board member of the “Stiftung Freiburger Münster”, as managing director of the board of the “Kuratorium Freiburger Schloßberg eV”, as chairman of the “Förderverein Freiburger Fasnetmuseum eV” and as a vice-president of the association “On the Tracks the Habsburg ”. From 1987 to 1994 Peter Kalchthaler was chairman of the “Bürgererverein Oberwiehre-Waldsee eV” and from 1989 to 1995 chairman of the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Freiburger Bürger-, Lokal- und Ortsvereine”.
