The Freiburger Münsterbauverein e. V. is a non-profit association founded in 1890 whose task is the structural preservation of the Freiburg Cathedral and thus the continuation of the Münsterbauhütte .

Club history

In 1889, a number of structural defects were documented on the Freiburg Minster, which the owner, a medieval foundation , was unable to remedy . That is why the then Mayor of Freiburg , Otto Winterer, appealed to the population to save the cathedral by founding an association. As early as the 19th century, the association had 4,000 members. The significant successes that the association was able to achieve through the collection of donations , the organization of lotteries and through bequests that were intended for it not only made it possible to carry out important work on the cathedral, but also to carry out research on the history of the building, so that the association between 1905 and 1922 published the Freiburg Cathedral Papers.

The economic success of the club did not survive the two world wars. Nevertheless, today the association has once again developed into a considerable pillar of the Freiburg Minster and, with 5,000 members, is one of the largest sponsoring associations of its kind in Germany .

In addition to the church, the city of Freiburg and other public bodies, the association currently raises around one sixth of the funds required to maintain the cathedral.

Special purpose establishments

In order to carry out its tasks, the association maintains two special-purpose businesses : the Freiburg Münsterbauhütte ( location coordinates: 47 ° 59 ′ 40.9 ″  N , 7 ° 51 ′ 21.5 ″  E ) and the Münsterladen ( location ).

The Münsterbauhütte is a stonemasonry whose traditions go back to the Middle Ages. Today the Münsterbauhütte is responsible for planning and carrying out the restoration work in the Münster. In the interests of authenticity, traditional craft techniques are still cultivated and used today. The figures on the facade of the new Münsterbauhütte are copies of the Seven Liberal Arts from the tower hall of the cathedral. In the Munster store brochures, documentation, etc. are sold over the cathedral and the Münsterbauverein.
