Hermann Gombert
Hermann Gombert (born June 9, 1909 in Saarbrücken ; † September 9, 2001 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German art historian .
Hermann Gombert studied philosophy, church history and art history at the University of Freiburg from 1932 to 1932 , then until 1936 Catholic theology at the Trier seminary . From 1936 he studied art history, classical archeology and Christian archeology in Freiburg, where he received his doctorate in February 1940 under Joseph Sauer . He then worked briefly at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz before he was drafted into military service and therefore could not take up the travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute awarded to him for 1940/41 . From 1946 he worked for the Freiburg Municipal Collections , initially as a research assistant, and from 1953 until his retirement in 1974 as director.
