history

The castle, built around 1200 by the Counts of Nellenburg , was first mentioned in a sale in 1288. The ruin consists of two complexes with two towers, which at times belonged to different knight families, therefore the tower that can be climbed today is called Grüningen, the other tower is also called Weissenburg, after the family castle of the same name of the barons of Krenkingen in Klettgau near Weisweil ( Weißenburg ). Johann von Krenkingen-Weißenburg used the castle as a base for raids into the area of the St. Blasien monastery and was therefore banned from church by the Basel Council . Wolf von Lichtenstein, who probably came to parts of their former possessions after the death of Henman von Hauenstein and his wife Else Sweininger (von Lichtenstein), bought "Castle and Veste Roggenbach" and the Bailiwick of Riedern am Wald in 1436 and 1437. He was married to Küngold von Randeck im Ries, daughter of Heinrich von Randeck. Ultimately, the castle was destroyed in 1438 by Austrian troops under Werner von Staufen , but was partially rebuilt in 1443 by Johann's son. As early as 1482, when it was sold to the Counts of Lupfen , it was only named as the Burgstall . In 1525, during the Peasants' War , the remaining farm buildings , as well as the neighboring stone castle , were finally destroyed.

After the male line of the Counts of Lupfen died out in 1582, the Pappenheimers also inherited Burgstall and Herrschaft Roggenbach. In 1609 the Pappenheimers sold it to the St. Blasien monastery, which remained the owner until the secularization in 1806.

A connection between the barons of Roggenbach and Roggenbach Castle has not been documented. In the literature, the conclusion is often drawn that the Lords of Roggenbach derive their name from this castle.

The former castle complex still shows the remains of the foundation walls of the residential buildings, the northern keep , the remains of a separation wall and the remains of the still accessible southern keep.
