Roggenbach is the name of an old Alemannic noble family whose ancestral castle was in the Albgau .

The name

The name Roggenbach appears in documents in a variety of spellings (Roccenbach, Rockenbach, Roggebach, Rocgenbach, Rochembach, Roggimbach, Rockimbach, Rockinbach, Roggenbahe). One interpretation of the origin of the name refers to the Celtic word Rocan for peasant hut. Another interpretation refers to the Celtic word rock for rock, according to which Roggenbach would be the rock washed around by the brook, which would apply to the rocks of the Roggenbach Castle - the ancestral castle of the Roggenbach - which was washed by the Steina .

history

The family first appears in a document in 1132 with Werner von Roggenbach , who appears in close connection with Duke Berthold IV of Zähringen and with whom the line of tribe begins. In the course of time, several secondary lines formed, but all of them disappeared in the male line - only the older Schopfheimer line still exists.
