Berthold IV. (Zähringen)
Berthold IV of Zähringen (* around 1125 ; † December 8, 1186 ) was Duke of Zähringen and Duke of Burgundy . He founded numerous cities, including Freiburg im Üechtland .
Life
Berthold succeeded his father Konrad von Zähringen as Duke of Zähringen and as Duke of Burgundy in 1152 . However, with the marriage of Friedrich Barbarossa to Beatrix of Burgundy , the latter ducal dignity was lost. In 1156 Berthold received the title rector Burgundiae and bailiwick rights over Geneva , Lausanne and Sion as compensation . The competition with the neighboring Duke of Swabia - Friedrich von Rothenburg - prompted him on the side of Welf VI. to fight in the Tübingen feud (1164–1166). In 1173 he received the bailiwick of Zurich . According to the entry in the Necrologium minus Monasterii S. Petri Nigrae Silvae , the death calendar of the Zähringen monastery of St. Peter , it was commemorated every year on September 8th as part of a funeral office for which five candles were donated. It says literally: Berchtoldus 4th dux de Zaeringen, officium cum 5 candelis .
