Cape Clear Island (also Clear Island ; Gäl . Cléire or Oileán Chléire ) is the southernmost inhabited island of Ireland and after the 6.5 km southwestern Fastnet Rock, the second southernmost ever, and is located in the southwest of County Cork . It is only three kilometers long, max. 1.5 km wide and has about 120 residents. An isthmus divides them into two unequal halves. Your north port can be reached within 45 minutes, past Sherkin Island , from Baltimore or from Schull on the Mizen Peninsula by boat. The southern harbor is a berth for yachts.
The ruin of a simple rectangular medieval church stands on the site of an older monastery associated with Saint Ciarán (St. Kieran) of the Iroschott Church , who is believed to have been born here, which is controversial but spread by the locals. The church has been in ruins since 1693 and is a protected national monument.
