history

Saga Ruby

The company took over the former Sagafjord as the first ship . After their six-month charter for Transocean Tours expired, the ship was put into service in 1997 under the new name Saga Rose .

In 2003, Saga Cruises also chartered the Minerva , built in 1989, to temporarily strengthen the fleet. During these missions the ship went under the name Saga Pearl . In 2004, the fleet was permanently expanded to include a ship, and the Caronia , a sister ship of the Saga Rose , was taken over by Cunard and renamed Saga Ruby . After being modernized in a Maltese shipyard, the ship set sail in March 2005 for its first cruise, directed by Saga. The ship's last cruise ended in Southampton on January 9, 2014.

In November 2009, the Saga Rose was decommissioned because the requirements of SOLAS 2010 were not met. The ship's last cruise was a 37-day Mediterranean cruise.

As a replacement for the Saga Rose , the Astor , built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG in Hamburg in 1980 , then under the name Astoria , was taken over. After a renovation of around 14 million pounds sterling , the ship has been in service with Saga Cruises since mid-March 2010 under the name Saga Pearl II .

In 2011 the fleet was strengthened through the purchase of the former Europe of Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten . Between November 2011 and February 2012 the ship was overhauled at the Fincantieri shipyard in Trieste and renamed Saga Sapphire . On the first voyage under the new name in mid-April 2012, there was a machine failure and the cruise had to be canceled.

A new building was ordered from Meyer Werft in September 2015 . It should be measured with 55,900 GT, 234 meters long and 30.8 meters wide. Delivery is planned for summer 2019, a second new building with delivery in spring 2021 has been optioned. On March 30, 2017, the name Spirit of Discovery was announced for the first new building. Construction began on February 28, 2018 under construction number S. 714. The keel was laid on June 28, 2018. In September 2017, the second new building, the Spirit of Adventure , was ordered. Construction under construction number S. 715 began on March 27, 2019. The ship is to be delivered in 2020.

River cruises are also to be offered with the Spirit of the Rhine from 2021 .

Spirit of Adventure Cruises

From 2005, attempts were made within the company to establish Spirit of Adventure Cruises as a second brand. For this purpose, another ship was initially procured in March 2006 and operated under the name Spirit of Adventure . After parting with this ship in 2012, the saga Pearl II was renamed Quest for Adventure and operated for the second brand. Finally, in 2013 it was decided to completely give up the brand and the Quest for Adventure was reintegrated into the main fleet under the old name.
