Paul Schäuble

Paul Schäuble OSB (born February 13, 1863 in Segeten , † September 22, 1955 in Saint Benedict near Covington ) was a Benedictine and first abbot of St. Joseph's Abbey in Louisiana .

After completing his apprenticeship as a merchant in Kehl , Franz Joseph Schäuble went to the USA in 1881, where he attended school in St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana . He then entered this Benedictine abbey as a monk and received the religious name Paul . He made his profession on July 19, 1885 and was ordained a priest on June 16, 1889. With a small group he founded the St. Joseph Priory in the town of Saint Benedict in Louisiana in 1889 and became an abbey after Pope Leo XIII's elevation . Elected first abbot in 1903. In 1907 a fire destroyed the newly built monastery, under his direction it was rebuilt. In 1932 he gave up his abbot and went to a leper hospital in Carville as a pastor, where around 400 patients were cared for. Here, in addition to his pastoral work, he was also working as a builder, under his direction a church was built.

At the age of 85 he took up the position of chaplain to the Benedictine Sisters of St. Gertrud in Ramsay. Four years later he returned to his home monastery. He died on September 22, 1955 at the age of 92 and was buried in the monastery cemetery.
