Ignatius Gumpp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ignatius Gumpp also Ignaz Gumpp , (* 1691 in Bräunlingen ; † April 11, 1763 in Gurtweil ) was a Benedictine , theologian, prior , provost and historian. He is not to be confused with his brother, the priest Laurentius Gump (* 1698 in Bettmaringen ).

Life

Ignatius Gumpp studied in Salzburg and was then a teacher at the monastery school in St. Blasien . In 1715 he was ordained a priest. Under Abbot Blasius II he became a Sacellarius and accompanied him on his embassy trips , including to Vienna. He was the registrar under Franz II Schächtelin . He became provost of the Berau monastery , prior in St. Blasien for four years, superior in Todtmoos for ten years , provost in Bürgeln , then provost again in Berau and finally provost in Gurtweil. In Gurtweil he was primarily concerned with historical research and historiography; manuscripts on the history of Berau, Bürgeln and St. Blasien have come down to us, here in particular the inventory from 1736 to 1756: Ortus et occasus monasterii s. Blasii of the medieval monastery that was abandoned at the time. Reports have also come down to us, for example of his participation at a dinner, during which Abbot Franz II Schächtelin discussed the new construction of the monastery with the builder Johann Michael Beer von Bleichten .
