history
The name Stotzheim is derived from the dialect expression storze , which means tree stump, which is why three tree trunks are shown on the city arms.
In 783 Stotzheim was first mentioned in a document from the Weissenburg Monastery as Stozzesvillare , and in 814 as Stotezheim in a document from Ludwig the Pious . In 1314 the Bishop of Strasbourg bought the parish.
In 1444 Stotzheim was sacked by Armagnacs during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) . In the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) it was sacked by the Swedes , who set fire to the church. A new church was not built until 1765.
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Stotzheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Schlettstadt district in the Lower Alsace district .
