Stotzheim (German Stotzheim in Alsace ) is a French commune with 1,064 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein and the Canton of Obernai . The inhabitants are called Stotzheimois .

geography

The municipality of Stotzheim is located in the Upper Rhine Plain , about 25 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg . Only in the south-west does the municipality have a small share of the vines planted foothills of the Vosges . The Andlau forms the northern, the Scheer the southeastern municipal boundary of Stotzheim.

The settlement area of ​​the village stretches along the Muehlbach , an artificial branch of the Andlau.

Neighboring communities of Stotzheim are Zellwiller in the north, Kertzfeld in the east, Huttenheim and Sermersheim in the southeast, Epfig in the south and Saint-Pierre in the west.

history

The name Stotzheim is derived from the dialect expression storze , which means tree stump, which is why three tree trunks are shown on the city arms.

In 783 Stotzheim was first mentioned in a document from the Weissenburg Monastery as Stozzesvillare , and in 814 as Stotezheim in a document from Ludwig the Pious . In 1314 the Bishop of Strasbourg bought the parish.

In 1444 Stotzheim was sacked by Armagnacs during the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) . In the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) it was sacked by the Swedes , who set fire to the church. A new church was not built until 1765.

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Stotzheim belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Schlettstadt district in the Lower Alsace district .

Culture and sights

The Saint-Nicolas church was built in 1765 on the site of a previous church from 1626.

Grünstein Castle was built in the 13th century, but was replaced by today's castle in the 16th century. In 1298 it is mentioned as Schollenhof in a document, in 1339 as Steinernestock and only from 1690 as Pierre Verte or "Grünstein". It was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1986. The castle is privately owned.

Stotzheim is represented with three flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of three flowers can be achieved.

Since 1965, Stotzheim has had a partnership with the German municipality of Ortenberg , about 35 kilometers as the crow flies on the other side of the Rhine .
