Gertwiller (German Gertweiler ) is a French commune with 1250 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein and the Canton of Obernai .
geography
The municipality of Gertwiller is located on the Kirneck at the foot of the Vosges , immediately east of Barr , about 24 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg .
Neighboring communities of Gertwiller are Bourgheim in the northeast, Zellwiller in the southeast, Barr in the southwest and Heiligenstein in the northwest.
history
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Gertwiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Schlettstadt district in the Lower Alsace district .

Culture and sights
Gingerbread has been made in Gertwiller since the 18th century. Around 1900, eight to nine independent gingerbread manufacturers are said to have existed. Today there are still two factories, Fortwenger and Lips . The Musée du pain d'épices et de l'art populaire alsacien , the gingerbread and art museum, which they founded, also exhibits Frankenthal porcelain works by Paul, Joseph and Karl-Franz Hannong.
Markets and village festivals are held annually.
The frescos from the 14th century in the choir of the Evangelical Lutheran church "Saint-Barthélemy" are worth seeing .

Main occupations in Gertwiller are viticulture and tourism. Located in the middle of the Alsatian wine-growing region , the Klevener de Heiligenstein variety is pressed here.
