Zellwiller (German Zellweiler ) is a French commune with 794 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein and the Canton of Obernai .

geography

The community is located in the western Upper Rhine Plain , about 25 kilometers southwest of Strasbourg . The Andlau River crosses the municipality from southwest to northeast .

Neighboring communities of Zellwiller are Bourgheim and Valff in the north, Kertzfeld in the southeast, Stotzheim in the south, Saint-Pierre in the southwest and Barr and Gertwiller in the northwest.

history

The name of the place appears for the first time in the 7th century. At that time the area around Zellwiller belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine . In the early 20th century, agriculture began to focus on raising livestock and growing tobacco. Pinot noir is pressed in viticulture .

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Zellwiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the Erstein district in the Lower Alsace district .
