Location of the district of Erstein | |
The county Erstein was from 11 January 1871 to 1920, a German district in the district of Lower Alsace of the Empire State Alsace-Lorraine . The area of the district is today essentially in the arrondissement of Sélestat-Erstein in the French department of Bas-Rhin .
history
After Alsace-Lorraine fell to the German Empire as a result of the Frankfurt Peace Treaty , the Erstein district was formed in 1871 from the then French arrondissement of Erstein. After the end of the First World War , the district was occupied by France in 1918 and, with the entry into force of the Versailles Treaty on January 10, 1920, belonged to the French state again as the Arrondissement of Erstein .
During the Second World War , Alsace-Lorraine was under German occupation from 1940 to 1944. During this time, the area of the Erstein district initially formed the district of Erstein . In 1941 the district was dissolved and its area was divided into the neighboring districts of Molsheim , Strasbourg and Schlettstadt . The district was not annexed in the sense of international law , but was subordinate to the Gauleiter for the Gau Baden in Karlsruhe . Between November 1944 and February 1945 the district was recaptured by Allied forces and returned to France.
