The Diedenhofen-West district was a German district in the Lorraine district of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine from 1901 to 1920 . The area of ​​the district is today essentially in the Arrondissement Thionville of the French department of Moselle .

history

After Alsace-Lorraine fell to the German Empire through the Frankfurt Peace Treaty , the Diedenhofen district existed since 1871 . This district was divided into the two districts of Diedenhofen-West and Diedenhofen-Ost in 1901 . Diedenhofen remained the district town for both districts. After the end of the First World War , the district was occupied by France in 1918 and, with the entry into force of the Versailles Treaty on January 10, 1920, it belonged to the French state as the Arrondissement Thionville-Ouest .

During the Second World War , Alsace-Lorraine was under German occupation from 1940 to 1944. During this time, the area of ​​the Thionville-Ouest arrondissement initially formed the district of Diedenhofen-West . On December 1, 1940, the district was merged with the neighboring district of Diedenhofen-Ost to form a district of Diedenhofen . The district area was not annexed in the sense of international law , but was part of the CdZ area of ​​Lorraine . This was subordinate to the Gauleiter for the Gau Saarpfalz (from 1942 Westmark ) in Saarbrücken . Between November and December 1944, the district was occupied by Allied forces and returned to France. The two pre-war arrondissements Thionville-Ouest and Thionville-Est were again established by France .
