Moyeuvre-Grande (1871-1915 German wholesale moyeuvre , 1915-18 Großmövern and 1940-44 Mövern ) is a French municipality with 7823 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Moselle in the region of Grand Est (before 2016 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Thionville .
geography
The community of Moyeuvre-Grande is located 15 kilometers southwest of Thionville on the Orne and its tributary Conroy . The municipality borders on the Meurthe-et-Moselle department to the west .
history
The place was first mentioned in 871 under the name Modover and is located in the middle of the Lorraine ore region. Ore mining and associated forges have been in operation since the Middle Ages.
Although the place has always been on the French side of the historical German-French language border , it came to the German Empire in 1871 through the Peace of Frankfurt , since Germany insisted on the cession of the eastern half of the Lorraine ore region. Numerous residents then emigrated to France, but at the same time, with the onset of industrialization, an economic rise in the region began. From 1871 to 1915 the place had the official German name Groß-Moyeuvre , from 1915 to 1918 it was Germanized into Großmövern . In 1918 the town fell back to France with the Treaty of Versailles .
From 1940 to 1944 the place was once again under German control under the name Mövern , but because of its status as an industrial location, most of the inhabitants escaped the expulsion of the French-speaking Lorraine, which was carried out by the German civil administration in the autumn of 1940.
Until 2015, Moyeuvre-Grande was the eponymous capital of the canton of Moyeuvre-Grande, which was dissolved that year .
