It belongs to the Arrondissement Sélestat-Erstein , to the canton Sélestat and is a member of the Ried de Marckolsheim community association .

The municipality of Schœnau is located on the Rhine , which forms the border with Germany here. The Rhine is cordoned off at the Schœnau level and the water is guided over a section of the Rhine canal ( loop ) to the Diebolsheim barrage .

Neighboring municipalities of are Rheinhausen (Baden-Württemberg) in the northeast, Weisweil (Baden-Württemberg) in the southeast, Artolsheim in the southwest, Richtolsheim in the west and Saasenheim and Sundhouse in the northwest.
