The Gross Windgallen is 3187 m above sea level. M. high mountain of the Glarus Alps in the Swiss canton of Uri . It is north of the Maderanertal and south of the Schächental . Together with the Chli Windgällen ( 2986 m above sea level ), it forms the western cornerstone of the massive mountain range with Gross Ruchen , Gross Schärhorn and Clariden , which drops to the north with steep, mighty rock faces. At the foot of the up to 900 meter high north face of the Gross Windgallen lies at 2028 m above sea level. M. the Seewlisee . With a surface of nine hectares and a depth of up to 20 meters, it is the largest natural mountain lake in the canton of Uri.
First ascent
The first ascent took place in 1848 by the popular Uri guide Josef Maria Tresch-Exer together with Melchior Tresch. He was able to carry out the planned ascent with his guide guest Georg Hoffmann ten days later.
Normal route
The South Windgällen hut ( AACZ ) at 2032 m above sea level serves as a base for an ascent via the normal route . M. The route leads over the Stäfelfirn the eastern wall, through this (climb up to the III. Difficulty ) to the north ridge and via this to the summit. The overall difficulty of this alpine tour is quite difficult .
Origin of name
The name of the Gross Windgallen derives from Gälle, gellen , which means something like howl, shrill, whistle, a place exposed to the wind .
