The Gross Ruchen is a 3138 m above sea level. M. high mountain in the Glarus Alps in the Swiss canton of Uri . It is part of the massive rock chain Clariden , Chammliberg , Gross- and Chli Schärhorn , Chli Ruchen, Gross Ruchen, Gross Windgällen , Chli Windgällen , which lies between the northern Schächental and the southern Maderanertal . To the north, this chain falls with steep rock walls that reach a height of over 1000 meters.
To the east of the summit is the approximately 100 hectare Ruchenfirn. The Brunnital has its origin below the mighty north face .
The Gross Ruchen was first climbed on July 12, 1864 by the Englishman John Sowerby with the guides Ambros Zgraggen and Josef Maria Tresch-Exer .
The walls of Gross- and Chli Ruchen are separated by the Ruch Chälen , a steep firn couloir. This couloir, which is up to 40 ° steep, is the easiest ascent to the Ruchenfirn and from there to the summit. This route is considered one of the most demanding ski tours in Central Switzerland.
An alpine climbing route leads through the mighty north face in III. Level of difficulty .
The 700 meter high northeast face was first climbed in 1999 by Urs Odermatt and Stefan Tuni.
